Press Release - April 1, 2010

Toy Exhibition at Pearson International Airport, Toronto, Canada

Opening April 1, 2010 and running until until the end of July 2010 at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Terminal 1, the exhibition is the result of a partnership... between the Canadian Toy Collectors’ Society (CTCS), the University of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA).

All of the toys are on loan from the CTCS’ extensive collection, most of which are made in Canada.

Exploring the Toy Box presents games, toys, and dolls of the past and present and explores the whimsical world of children’s toys. It features dolls, games, trucks and musical instruments from the 1940s to today and is on display in the Malton Airport Gallery, above the Canada Arrivals Hall. A boarding pass is not required to visit this exhibition

A second exhibit, Boosting Business: Companies Team Up with Toys, also features toys from the extensive C.T.C.S. collection. It is housed in the Terminal 1 Skylight Gallery and toys examines the ways in which these playthings have become an integral part of childhood and beyond. An international boarding pass is required to visit this exhibit.

Both shows are curated by Caryn Debuck, Robin Dow, Milena McCormack, Alexandra Pearcey, and Heidi Schmeiser - graduate students in the Master’s of Museum Studies program at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto.

Lee Petrie, curator for the GTAA and mentor for the student curators, is delighted with the partnership. “The CTCS has a wonderful collection but no permanent exhibition space, so it was a great opportunity to share their toys with a huge audience. Gaining curatorial experience was really valuable for the students and incredibly gratifying when they saw how airport guests and employees immediately engaged with the shows and shared their memories of childhood toys.” .
